  • Six schools in North West Cambridgeshire are now eligible for government-funded breakfast clubs as national programme expands.
  • Local MP calls on schools to apply, with support set to save parents up to £450 a year and help children start the school day ready to learn.
Families across North West Cambridgeshire could soon benefit from the next phase of the Government’s national rollout of free breakfast clubs, with six local schools now eligible to apply.
Applications opened this week for the next 500 schools that will begin offering free breakfast clubs from April 2026. A further 1,500 schools will follow in September as part of wider work to support children’s learning and ease pressure on household budgets.
This comes after Northborough Primary School and St John Henry Newman Catholic Primary School in Hampton rolled out free breakfast clubs in February this year as part of the scheme.
The programme is targeted at areas where families are feeling the sharpest squeeze, with this round prioritising schools where at least 40% of pupils are eligible for free school meals.
Sam Carling MP said:
“I want to support every eligible school in our area to take up this opportunity. Breakfast clubs make a real difference – they help children settle, they take pressure off busy mornings, and they put money back in parents’ pocket.
I’ve heard directly from families about how much this support helps them, and I want children in our region to feel those benefits too.
We’re delivering on what we promised: real help with the cost of living and a better start to the day for local pupils.”
Breakfast clubs have already shown strong results during the test-and-learn phase, improving attendance, boosting concentration and helping children make additional progress in core subjects. More than 1 in 3 parents say they struggle to provide a healthy breakfast every morning due to cost, time pressures or fussy eating.
The national rollout forms part of wider work to improve children’s life chances – including expanding free school meals to every family on Universal Credit and increasing investment in early years and childcare.
Sam has written to all six eligible local schools, outlining the support available and encouraging them to apply.
