Three schools in North West Cambridgeshire are set to benefit from government funding to improve their buildings, as part of Labour’s programme of investment in the condition of schools across England.
Abbey College in Ramsey, John Clare Primary School and Wittering Primary School have all been successful in securing support through the Government’s Condition Improvement Fund for 2026/27.
The fund forms part of a national package worth more than £450 million, supporting 684 schools and colleges with projects to improve school buildings, including repairs to roofs, heating systems and electrical infrastructure.
The investment is part of Labour’s wider plans to improve the condition of school estates after years of underinvestment and ensure children can learn in safe, warm and fit-for-purpose buildings.
Sam Carling, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, welcomed the announcement, saying:
“Every child deserves to learn in a building that is safe, well maintained and fit for purpose.
Parents rightly expect schools to be places where children can focus on learning, rather than staff having to worry about the condition of the buildings around them.
It’s welcome news that Abbey College, John Clare Primary School and Wittering Primary School have all secured support through this year’s Condition Improvement Fund.
This investment is part of Labour’s wider commitment to renewing our schools and making sure children have the environment they need to achieve and thrive.”
Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson said:
“The defining image of the school estate under the previous government was children sitting under steel props to stop crumbling concrete falling on their heads. It simply isn’t good enough.
“Parents expect their children to learn in a safe warm environment. It’s what children deserve, and it is what we are delivering.
“This investment is about more than just buildings – it’s about showing children that their education matters, their futures matter, and this government is determined to give them the best possible start in life.”
The Condition Improvement Fund is one part of more than £2.1 billion being invested this year to improve the condition of schools and colleges across England. It sits alongside Labour’s long-term plans to renew the education estate and improve learning environments for children and young people.
